To demonstrate the high price people pay for freedom of expression, we put the world’s most expensive article behind a paywall. An article written in support of those whose words and work have cost them dearly. The article is written by Pulitzer Prize winner Esther Htu San.

Journalist Ester Htu San is the author of the world’s most expensive article. Esther was born and raised in Kachin State, Burma. In 2016, she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for her reports on human trafficking and slavery in the South Asian seafood industry. Because of her journalism, she has been threatened repeatedly and forced to flee her country.
