The state of democracy and human rights is worsening in many parts of Asia. People are increasingly prevented from organising and advocating for their civil and political rights due to new repressive laws that are being introduced. The laws are used arbitrarily as a way of instilling fear and silencing by arresting critics and dissidents. Journalists and others who document abuses of power are arrested and threatened with violence.
