Discrimination Against Roma Children in Primary School

In Macedonia, Roma children are placed in special classes and the segregation is widespread in many areas, Macedonian Helsinki Committee says in its latest monthly report on the human rights situation in the country.

Segregation of Roma children in education is common, even though Macedonia has established a strategy to avoid stigmatization of the group. According to the Macedonian Helsinki Committee the strategy is not followed in practice, since schools still applies mono-ethnic classes, which complicates integration.

In the report for October-November Macedonian Helsinki Committee also points out positive developments in the area of human rights in Macedonia. In September, a draft law on free legal aid was presented to the Parliament. Civil Rights Defenders has, together with partner organisations, been working for a legal aid law since 2007.
