Camilla Nagler elected to the Board of Civil Rights Defenders

Civil Rights Defenders held its Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, 27 May, in Stockholm. The meeting elected Camilla Nagler as a new board member, while Christian Åhlund was thanked for his service.

Camilla Nagler is a lawyer and has dedicated her career to the publishing industry. For over thirty years, she has worked as a publisher, consistently advocating for authors’ freedom of expression. She has published many authors with strong voices for human rights, such as Amos Oz and Herta Müller.
“This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Helsinki Final Act, an agreement that marked an important milestone for human rights and a significant part of Civil Rights Defenders’ history. The organisation was founded by Gerald and Monica Nagler with the aim of monitoring compliance with human rights in accordance with the declaration. It is therefore particularly fitting that Camilla is now joining the board, bringing both her expertise and continuity to the organisation,” said Hanna Gerdes, Chair of the Board at Civil Rights Defenders.

“Her extensive experience and deep commitment to human rights will be invaluable assets to Civil Rights Defenders, and we look forward to continuing our work together to defend and promote democracy and human rights worldwide,” Hanna continues.
Camilla Nagler’s upbringing was marked by a strong commitment to democracy and human rights. During her education, she was a trainee at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) in New York, where she worked on the Women’s Rights Project, an initiative founded and led by Ruth Bader Ginsburg. In 2006, she co-founded the Teskedsorden foundation with Tidningen Vi, which worked for equal rights for all and against discrimination and racism. In 2022, she was one of the initiators of Läs-kvarten, a democracy project aimed at improving children’s reading comprehension in schools.
