Georgian human rights defenders sentenced for peaceful protest
Civil Rights Defenders call on Georgian authorities to closely follow up on court decisions made towards human rights defenders to prevent punishment of human rights defenders and to ensure the peaceful exercise of freedom of assembly and expression.
On September 27, 2023, Tbilisi City Court announced the judgement on the case of Eduard Marikashvili, head of Georgian Democratic Initiative, who was arrested on June 2, along with other human rights defenders/activists, for holding a blank paper and peacefully expressing solidarity for activists arrested unlawfully before. Eduard was found guilty of petty hooliganism under Article 166 of the Administrative Offences Code and was fined 500 Georgian Lari.
