“I am certain that I will devote my professional career to fighting human rights violations”
Nazli Pirayehgar is the first lawyer to join the Gerald Nagler Human Rights Traineeship. The programme, which has been made possible through the support of Civil Rights Defenders’ founder and honorary chair Gerald Nagler, gives young lawyers an opportunity to work closely with professional experts and gain insight into the human rights situation in the world, while also giving the lawyer relevant experience for a future professional career in the field of Human Rights.
“Awareness of human rights has grown exponentially in recent decades, it is a fantastic development. Today, everyone – individuals, governments, organisations, private and public sectors – must consider human rights. But at the same time, just opening a newspaper is enough to see that the need for lawyers who work with human rights is dire today. Things got better in the world when the Iron Curtain fell – but now the trend is back to being negative. That’s why we need young, committed, and talented lawyers like Nazli, says Gerald Nagler when he summarises the development of human rights during his own long and successful career.
The Gerald Nagler Human Rights Traineeship is aimed at lawyers under the age of 30 with a documented interest in human rights work, as well as relevant work experience. The programme contributes to increasing the number of Sweden-based lawyers who engage in human rights work. In the long run, the programme contributes to a higher level of knowledge about human rights related issues among lawyers working in different sectors. The recruitment agency Alumni supports the recruitment process of the lawyer pro-bono.
“I am happy and grateful for this opportunity. I have been interested in human rights work for a long time. The work at Civil Rights Defenders has shown me that I made the right choice. I am certain that I will devote my professional career to fighting human rights violations. I agree with Gerald that there is an incredible amount of work to do, there are many challenges”, says Nazli Pirayehgar.
