The date is approaching for the government’s decision on Beowulf Mining’s application for permission to mine iron ore (mining concession) in Gállok/Kallak outside Jokkmokk. Affected reindeer herding districts and many Sami who do not participate in reindeer husbandry have said no to the mine.

Real Sami influence in the overall process has been almost non-existent and there is much to suggest that the mining project would have a disproportionate impact on the surrounding nature and Sami reindeer husbandry, hunting, fishing, and cultural heritage in the area. The government should thus reject the application.
