Grief and Sorrow After Our Colleague’s Tragic Death in Ethiopia

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we can confirm that we have lost our dear friend and colleague Josefin Ekermann, 30, in a tragic plane accident outside Addis Abeba, Ethiopia.

Josefin was on board the flight between Addis Abeba and Nairobi that went down early Sunday morning, March 10th, outside of Ethiopia’s capital Addis Abeba (at 9 am local time). According to Ethiopian Airlines official statements, there are no survivors after the accident and so far no confirmed information on the causes of the accident.

Based at Civil Rights Defenders Stockholm Office, Josefin worked with education and support to human rights defenders. She was travelling in the region and was on her way to Nairobi to meet East African partner organisations.

– Josefin was a highly appreciated and respected colleague. Josefin will be deeply missed by all of us, and our thoughts are with her family and friends during this difficult time, says Anders L Pettersson, Executive Director at Civil Rights Defenders.

With respect to Josefin’s family and in the interest of establishing exactly what happened, we cannot comment further at this time.

Confirmamos con grande tristeza y pesadumbre la pérdida de nuestra amiga y colega Josefin Ekermann, 30, en el trágico accidente de avión en las afueras de Addis Abeba, Etiopía.  

Josefin se encontraba a bordo del vuelo que circulaba entre Addis Abeba y Nairobi y que se estrelló el domingo 10 de marzo por la mañana, cerca de la capital de Etiopía (9 am hora local). De acuerdo con los comunicados oficiales de Ethiopian Airlines, no hay supervivientes del accidente, y no existe información confirmada de la causa del suceso.  

Trabajando desde la sede de Civil Rights Defenders en Estocolmo, Josefin trabajaba en el ámbito formativo y de apoyo a defensores de derechos humanos. En el momento en que se produjo el accidente, ella se encontraba de viaje por los países de la región y estaba de camino a Nairobi para reunirse con organizaciones socias de África del Este.  

“Josefin era una colega muy apreciada y respetada. La echaremos mucho de menos, y acompañamos a su familia y amigos en estos momentos difíciles”, dice Anders L Pettersson, Director Ejecutivo en Civil Rights Defenders.

С огромной грустью и тяжелыми сердцами мы вынуждены подтвердить потерю нашего дорогого друга и коллеги Жозефин Экерманн в трагической авиакатастрофе недалеко от Аддис-Абебы, столицы Эфиопии.

Жозефин была одним из пассажиров на борту самолета, следовавшего по маршруту Аддис-Абеба – Найроби, который потерпел крушение ранним воскресным утром 10 марта недалеко от столицы Эфиопии (в 9 утра по местному времени). Согласно официальному заявлению “Эфиопских авиалиний” никто не выжил в авиакатастрофе, причины которой неизвестны до сих пор.

Жозефин работала в головном офисе Civil Rights Defenders в Стокгольме в сфере образования и поддержки правозащитников. Она путешествовала по данному району и собиралась встретиться с восточно-африканской партнерской организацией в Найроби.
