During the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Russia, the Swedish Football Association has together with Civil Rights Defenders met with Russian human rights defenders.

Civil Rights Defenders and the Swedish Football Association entered into cooperation in March 2018. Ahead of the tournament, Civil Rights Defenders informed the players, leaders and staff at the Swedish Football Association about the situation for human rights in Russia.

As part of the cooperation, the Swedish Football Association has, together with Civil Rights Defenders, met with Russian human rights defenders Anna Dobrovolskaya and Albert Kuznetzov. The meeting took place during the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Those attending the meeting were Håkan Sjöstrand, Secretary-General, Andreas Jansson, Director of Communications and Göran Havik, Project Manager for International Events at the Swedish Football Association, Anders L. Pettersson, Executive Director of Civil Rights Defenders, Anna Dobrovolskaya, Executive Director of Memorial and Albert Kuznetzov, lawyer at the Committee for the Prevention of Torture.

Memorial and the Committee for the Prevention of Torture are since long partners of Civil Rights Defenders. More information about the situation for Russian human rights organisations can be found in our 2018 report “Never Give Up: Russian Human Rights Defenders Keep Swimming under the Ice“.

More information about the meeting can be found here (in Swedish).
