Preventing Torture of People in Detention

Due to widespread impunity in Kosovo, people often do not report violence in prison. Civil Rights Defenders collaboration with Kosovo Rehabilitation Centre for Torture Victims (KRCT) refers to prevent torture or any other form of ill-treatment in places of detention and contribute to the respect of human rights in Kosovo. The target group consists of persons deprived of their liberty and relevant authorities.

Together with our partner we conduct regular and unannounced monitoring visits to detention centers in order to ensure public and transparent scrutiny of police holding cells. The findings of the monitoring and recommendations will be used to advocate for changes in legislation and improvements of basic conditions and the treatment of detainees.

In order to prevent human rights violations a regular and independent monitoring is essential. With the aim of establishing a permanent monitoring mechanism, KRCT has initiated and facilitated cooperation between the Ombudsperson institution and the Council for Defence of Human Rights and Freedoms (CDHRF).
