Report: Press unfreedom under authoritarian “hybrid” regimes
Within the framework of the Civil Rights Defenders’ priorities to support independent media, we have published a new report “Press Unfreedom under Authoritarian “Hybrid” Regimes”. The report highlights the state of press freedom and independent media in four countries – Hungary, Poland, Serbia, and Turkey.
The report concludes that situation for freedom of press is under pressure in all countries included in the report. The numbers demonstrate negative tendencies for independent media, which is, first of all, a result of backsliding democracies:
- In Serbia 119 journalists were attacked during 2019.
- More than 200 journalists and media workers have been imprisoned in Turkey in the past five years.
- 80% of the Hungary’s media landscape is controlled by the ruling party.
- 66/180 was Press Freedom Index of Poland in 2022. For comparison, in 2015 Poland ranked 18/180, which means in the last seven years the country experienced the record falling of press freedom.
