Joint Statement Urging Vietnam to Respect its Human Rights Obligations

On 10 December a coalition of Vietnamese civil society groups, Civil Rights Defenders and other international human rights organisations, urged the Vietnamese authorities to give three detained human rights defenders, including Bui Thi Minh Hang, a public and fair trial.

In the joint statement the coalition urged the Vietnamese authorities to ensure that the appeal proceedings on 12 December against the three human rights defender including Bui Thi Minh Hang are held in public and that family members and trial observers can access the courtroom.

These steps and other fair trial rights are necessary to ensure that Vietnam complies with its human rights obligations under domestic law and international human rights law. The international community, including various human rights organisations, will be monitoring the appeals hearing.
