Hopes of a Peaceful Pride Parade in Belgrade

The Serbian ministry of Interior has promised to protect the participants of the Pride parade, which takes place on 20 September in Belgrade. We will be there to see how much force the authorities put behind their promises.

In a letter to Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic and to Minister of Interior Ivica Dacic, Civil Rights Defenders welcome the positive measures that the Serbian government has taken lately to increase respect for basic human rights. The Law against discrimination, adopted in March this year, strengthens the protection against discrimination of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender persons as well as other vulnerable groups in society.

We have high expectations on the Serbian authorities this time. We hope that they will fulfill their promises and make it possible for the Pride participants to conduct the manifestation as planned. Click here to read the letter.

Thomas Hammarberg, European Council Commissioner for Human Rights, has made a statement on the same subject. Click here to read Thomas Hammarberg’s statement.
