Sweden

Civil Rights Defenders’ Legal department acts as Sweden’s local civil rights watchdog. As part of our work, our legal advisers pursue some individual legal cases when human rights have been violated. We also work with advocacy towards politicians, the Swedish police and those in power. We also write reports on the issues we work with.

Our legal advisers cover the following areas in Sweden:

  • Racism and discrimination
  • Ethnic and racial profiling
  • Hate crime legislation
  • Indigenous Sami rights
  • Ban on begging and other issues concerning vulnerable EU citizens
  • The compulsory care situation
  • Grave international crimes and universal jurisdiction
  • Asylum rights including medical age assessments
  • Police violence
  • The right to privacy
  • The right to a fair trial
