Civil Rights Defenders is looking for a Eurasia Programme Officer

Civil Rights Defenders is an international human rights organisation that is politically and religiously independent. The organisation defends people’s civil and political rights and empowers human rights defenders at risk. Civil Rights Defenders operates in Sweden and inte countries in the world where respect for human rights is at its weakest. We engage in advocacy and legal processes, and provide information on the situation with regard to human rights globally.

In the Eurasia Programme, the organisation cooperates closely with a number of human rights organisations. We advocate for improvements in the realm of human rights in Eurasia, both with regard to the general public and decision-makers. In addition to long-term expert, moral and stable financial support, we organise a variety of events, participate in coalitions with local partners, and conduct other joint advocacy and lobbying actions. All trainings are tailored to the needs of our partners. We invest effort in strengthening partners’ financial sustainability, including by offering them training and coaching on project management and organizational development.

Areas of Responsibility:
The Programme Officer (PO) is responsible to carry out and follow up on the programme and long- term partnerships with human rights organisations in the Eurasia region. The PO reports to the Programme Director (PD).

The position includes to:

  • Follow and analyse the human rights situation in the region
  • Travel frequently in the region (approximately 30-50 days/year, sometimes more)
  • Identify, assess and propose new partners and activities
  • Develop and improve the programme
  • Conduct human rights activities together with partners
  • Initiate, participate and conduct lobby and advocacy actions
  • Monitor, evaluate and report on partnerships and activities
  • Be a capacity building resource for partners
  • Identify fundraising opportunities, write concepts notes and applications for funding/assist in fundraising

Qualifications required:

  • A Bachelor degree in Law, Political Science, International Relations or similar, including education on international human rights mechanisms
  • A minimum of 2-3 years working experience with human rights
  • Working experience from the region, preferably human rights related work, and extensive knowledge of the human rights situation in Eastern Europe and Central Asia
  • Documented experience of NGO-work, project management and/or advocacy work
  • Fluency in English and Russian

About the position:

  • Permanent employment (100%) with an initial six-months probation period
  • The position is based at Civils Rights Defenders’ head office in Stockholm, Sweden with frequent travels in the region
